Practical guide to go and visit Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai (or Koh Hai, you will find both spellings) is one of the Trang islands. Its long sandy beach with resorts lined and its azure waters make it a popular destination although it is still relatively unknown by mass tourism. Like its neighbor Koh Kradan, Ko Ngai has no local life and is only dedicated to tourism. The only constructions on the island are hotels or restaurants.

The main beach and the pier are on the east side and there is a small beach with the sweet name of ''Paradise Beach'' on the other side of the island. I did not go so I can not tell you if it is worth to go but the beach name is lovely.

Accommodations in Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai hotels are mostly medium to superior resorts. Cheap accommodation are not numerous but there are still some. My favorite is the Koh Hai Seafood Resort with hard bungalows (cold water, fan only and electricity from 5 pm to 7am only) and an exellent restaurant but you can also rent tents at Koh Ngai Camping. I even found a tiny resort with 2 bamboo bungalows.

If you are looking to book a room in Koh Ngai, you will often find Koh Ngai Resort but it is located at the pier on a stretch of beach not very nice. I recommend you to go to the other resorts on the large beach next door. A small steep path connects the two beaches and longtail boats regularly shuttle between the pier and the large beach (50 THB per person).

Practical information about Koh Ngai

Like on every Trang islands, there is no ATM in Koh Ngai. So take enough cash with you because the prices of the bungalows and especially the restaurants are 2 to 3 times higher here than on the mainland. Staying on Koh Ngai is relatively expensive (for Thailand). There are also no supermarkets, just a minimart where prices are also 3 times higher.

From May to the end of October, in low season, I don't advise you to go to Koh Ngai, the weather can be very rainy and most of the resorts are closed.

How to go to Koh Ngai ?

Koh Ngai is on the ferry line between Phuket and Koh Lipe and on several speedboats routes. Therefore it is very easy to get there from Phuket, Koh Lanta, the other Trang islands, Trang of course and Koh Lipe. From Bangkok, you can come to Trang by train (I recommend the night train because it is very long, book online HERE) and then go to a travel agency opposite to the railway station to arrange your transfer to Koh Ngai. I recommend K. K. Travel, its owner gives excellent advice and knows perfectly all the islands and their resorts.

By plane, the airlines Nok Air and Air Asia offer formulas with flight from Bangkok + minivan + boat to Koh Ngai.

How to get around in Koh Ngai ?

There are no roads on Koh Ngai, no scooter either, you can oly get around by wlaking or by boat. There is also a steep path between the main beach (after the Thanya Resort) and the pier and some small paths in the forest including the one leading to 'Paradise Beach'.

Weather & climate in Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai a tropical climate. Temperatures don't vary a lot throughout the year although the pre-monsoon months from February to April are a little hotter. The year is divided into a dry season, from January to March and a long wet season from April to December, with the strongest rains in September.

The best time to come to Koh Ngai is from December to March knowing that during the low season from May to the end of October, when it rains the most, tourism activity is very limited and most of the resorts on Koh Ngai and other Trang islands are closed.
