Calendula is a member of the Daisy family, Asteraceae. It's an annual in most places, but can live as a short lived perennial in warmer regions like zone 8 and higher. Our plants are into their third year, and they seem to be getting stronger with each passing season. The foliage stays alive throughout the winter, even when covered by snow, and is the first plant to put out flowers in the early spring. The blooms seem to be irresistible to bees and other pollinators, so planting Calendula anywhere near the garden is good for increasing fruit production.

Calendula flowers are edible, rich in nutrition, and make an excellent addition to salads, curries, baked goods, confections, and more. Calendula Officinalis var. Resina is the most resinous variety of all the calendulas. To top it off, Calendula flowers also make stunningly beautiful dyes.

Growing Instructions:

Calendula Officinalis is a hardy and vigorous grower, and the seeds are best sown directly in the earth come early spring, but can also be started in pots to get a head start too. Sow seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep, and keep moist until sprouts emerge. Once established, these plants will put out an abundance of beautiful resinous flowers until hard frost. The plants can live for many years, assuming you live in zone 8 or warmer. They don’t require much, other than water and mulch. Plants are disease, drought, flood, and deer resistant.
