From the Classifieds: Honda Civic SiR

A genuine EG6 Civic SiR – the precursor to the famous Honda Civic Type R – is as rare as hen’s teeth

It’s hard to imagine the hot hatch world without the Honda Civic Type R, but pre-1997 that was exactly the case. And the closest thing you could get to the now-legendary nameplate was the Honda Civic SiR.

Until the conception of the Type R, the Si portfolio contained the sportiest Civics you could buy, with disc brakes at all four corners, a tacho showing 9000rpm, five-speed manual transmission, fancy wheel covers, powered wing mirrors and body-coloured door-handles.

Many readers will probably recall Honda Australia selling the third-gen Civic Si locally, but the Aussie cars shipped with a D16A8/9 non-VTEC DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine good for 96kW.

The Japanese domestic market, however, had access to the Civic SiR that paired all the aforementioned goodies with the now-lauded B16A 1.6-litre four-cylinder… the one with old-school-savage VTEC power.

These rampant buzz boxes roared out 125kW/157Nm and revved out to 8200rpm, but never came to Australia officially – although a handful like this 1993 Honda Civic SiR were imported privately and occasionally crop up for sale.

This particular example is the only third-gen Civic Si – let alone SiR – listed on carsales at the time of writing, and it’s only showing 2774km on the clock.

Currently going for $45,999, this Civic would be close to every Honda fanboy’s dream purchase not only for its bwah-ing heart, but for its sheer exclusivity and solid condition.

According to the seller, the car was imported from Japan in 1994 and then spent close to 26 years sitting in a shed before being recommissioned in 2019 with new spark plugs, ignition leads, timing belt, rocker cover gasket, engine oil, gearbox oil, coolant, air-filter, genuine Honda EG6 hubcaps and a brand-new set of high-performance Yokohama AD08Rs.

“Proper import approval was done in 2021 and the car is fully road legal and complied, can be registered in any state of Australia,” the ad reads.

Completely stock, currently on full Victorian registration and located in Carrum Downs, this Civic SiR is described as “a true collector’s car that belongs in a museum”.

Despite the extremely low miles, mint condition, obvious exclusivity and its clearly proud owner, this particular car has been up for sale since August last year and was originally listed for $60,000.

The price was slashed in November to $49,999 and then again a month later, down to the current $45,999 asking price.
